The story of Nokuthula Favorite Tsela

According to a young woman new to chicken cooperatives, she is making the most use of every opportunity she has to be productive and increase profits.

By owning her own vegetable garden where she uses chicken manure, Nokuthula daily sees the direct impacts her business training has had on her life.

“I am now able to give my children good food and orphans I care for are now well fed,” says Nokuthula (she cares for 7 dependents) . She doesn’t regret being part of this initiative, she says, and looks forward to employing others as her business expands.

Lessons she’s learned through AfricaWorks have been fulfilling, she says. Before, she had challenges relating to people in a number of areas, but through the business training, her communication skills have improved. Her husband is also supportive, she adds, and their relationship has been renewed.

“Working with other people in a cooperative is not easy but one has to learn patience and also learn to live with other people,” she says.

Currently AfricaWorks, our strategic partner in Southern Africa,  is working with 28 empowered female poultry farmers in Swaziland, including Nokuthula.  By working as a cooperative, these farmers market all their birds, and have a greater capacity to meet demands—proven by their sales.

An additional 392 family members, dependents and HIV/AIDS sick and orphaned benefit indirectly from these 28 poultry farmers.
