Kelber grew up among the clouds.

Born in Central America, young Kelber witnessed his parents work diligently to cultivate their coffee fields, which lay nestled atop rolling green hills some 3,000 feet above sea level. Over the years, their example instilled in him the values of hard work and land stewardship.

When his father passed away, it was up to Kelber to provide for his mother. Inspired to build upon his family’s legacy, 24-year-old Kelber began his own farming journey. First, he sought training in sustainable farming practices. Then, he planted more than three acres of coffee upon land passed down to him from his mother.

In his first year, Kelber harvested 1,350 pounds of coffee. It was a start, but Kelber saw himself going even further. What he needed was a partner.

Enriching his Farm Through Partnership

Kelber’s desire for continued growth led him to connect with a local partner of Partners Worldwide. Through their agriculture training sessions, he learned to control pests through traps and biological products. “This has allowed me to reduce the use of dangerous agrochemicals, thereby protecting my family and the environment,” said Kelber.

This partner connected Kelber with much-needed access to capital. So far, he’s accessed three loans for an average of $1,500 each, enabling him to build bathrooms and a kitchen as well as purchase products for his farm.

Finally, access to coaching equipped Kelber with the ongoing support system he needed. The sheer number of technical support visits to date—21—displays both Kelber’s passion for growth and this partner’s dedication to see that he reaches his fullest potential.

I dream of expanding my cultivation area, increasing productivity, and continuing to enhance the quality of my coffee with the goal of improving my family’s economy

Kelber’s Vision for the Future

Since he began farming, Kelber now produces nearly six times the amount of coffee, with an annual production of 7,500 pounds. He’s used his success to employ others in his community, creating one permanent position and eighteen seasonal positions on his farm. Additionally, his efforts to safeguard the land have inspired his fellow farmers to adopt similar practices, enriching their shared environment.

This is just the beginning of Kelber’s journey. “I dream of expanding my cultivation area, increasing productivity, and continuing to enhance the quality of my coffee with the goal of improving my family’s economy.”

The legacy of sustainability that began with Kelber’s parents has flourished, thanks to you. Because of your support, Kelber has access to everything and everyone he needs to accomplish his dreams, provide for his family, and uplift his community.
